The shutdown began after the Senate failed to approve Republican-backed legislation known as a “continuing resolution” on September 30. According to the federal government procedures, the measure fell short of the 60-vote threshold needed to pass, with three members of the Democratic caucus voting alongside Republicans. That means the Republican shutdown has just begun because they wouldn’t protect Americans’ health care.” House Speaker Mike Johnson countered, posting on X that “Democrats have officially voted to CLOSE the government,” listing various consequences including nutrition program suspensions and unpaid federal workers.

Representative Jamie Raskin, D-Md., tweeted that “MAGA’s government shutdown was totally avoidable,” while the White House’s official website now displays a government shutdown clock accusing Democrats of causing the closure.

Trump’s Position and Controversial Statements

Former President Trump told Politico “I don’t worry about that” when asked if he fears Americans will blame Republicans for a shutdown. Trump has also posted AI-generated videos, including one showing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries with a sombrero and mustache, which Jeffries called “disgusting.” Analysts suggest Trump has repeatedly brought up gender-affirming healthcare in shutdown discussions, though it’s unclear what specific policy he’s referencing.

According to recent polling, the political stakes are high for both parties. The Democratic Party, polling at their lowest level in history according to Gallup, potentially sees the shutdown negotiations as an opportunity to show resistance to Trump administration policies.
