Meanwhile, Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, who announced he is leaving to run his own startup, publicly disagrees, stating at the National University of Singapore in April that “most interesting problems scale extremely badly.” LeCun’s new venture, announced on LinkedIn in November, aims to build “world models” that understand the physical world, a direct alternative to the language-focused scaling path.
The Philosophical Split
Here’s the thing: this isn’t just a technical debate. It’s a billion-dollar philosophical split that defines the entire race for AGI. On one side, you have Hassabis and the “scaling maximalists” at places like Google and OpenAI. Their bet is relatively straightforward: throw more data and more compute at the problem, and intelligence will emerge.
