These AI browsers, which promise to automate tasks by clicking through websites and filling out forms on users’ behalf, are facing what experts describe as an unsolved security crisis.

According to cybersecurity analysts who’ve examined the technology, the core problem lies in what’s known as “prompt injection attacks” – a vulnerability that emerges when malicious instructions hidden on webpages trick AI agents into executing unauthorized commands. The concern isn’t just theoretical. Researchers at Brave, the privacy-focused browser company, have identified this as a “systemic challenge facing the entire category of AI-powered browsers.”

When Helpful AI Turns Harmful

What makes these AI browsers particularly concerning, security experts suggest, is the extensive access they require to be useful. The mechanics of these attacks are particularly troubling. Early versions involved hidden text telling AI agents to “forget all previous instructions” and perform malicious actions, but security firm McAfee reports the techniques have already evolved. Some now use images with hidden data representations to deliver malicious instructions, making detection even more challenging.

Industry Acknowledgment and Partial Solutions

Both OpenAI and Perplexity appear to be taking the threat seriously, though their responses acknowledge the problem’s complexity. OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer Dane Stuckey recently stated that “prompt injection remains a frontier, unsolved security problem,” noting that adversaries will “spend significant time and resources to find ways to make ChatGPT agents fall for these attacks.”

The companies have implemented various safeguards. OpenAI created a “logged out mode” where agents don’t access user accounts while browsing – a security measure that unfortunately limits the tool’s usefulness. Perplexity, meanwhile, says it built real-time detection systems to identify injection attempts as they occur.

Yet cybersecurity professionals caution that these measures don’t make the browsers bulletproof. As Brave researchers detailed in their analysis of Comet’s vulnerabilities, the fundamental architecture of AI agents creates separation challenges between core instructions and consumed data that current security approaches struggle to address.

Practical Protection for Early Adopters

For users experimenting with these emerging tools, security experts recommend several protective measures. Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, suggests treating AI browser credentials as high-value targets for attackers. She emphasizes using unique passwords and multi-factor authentication specifically for these accounts.

Perhaps the most practical advice involves limiting what these early versions can access. Security analysts recommend keeping AI browsers siloed away from sensitive accounts related to banking, healthcare, and personal communications. As Tobac notes, the security around these tools will likely improve as they mature, making cautious adoption the wiser approach for now.

What’s clear from the security community’s response is that we’re witnessing the early stages of what could become a significant cybersecurity battleground. As Steve Grobman of McAfee described it, the situation has already evolved into “a cat and mouse game” between attackers and defenders – one that will likely define the safety of AI-assisted browsing for years to come.
